Johnstown Jail
The historic Johnstown, Ohio jail located at 66 West Pratt St was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 18 2003. It was built in 1888-1889 at a cost of $539.00. It is 16 x 20 feet. with 12 inch walls of "burnt brick". The window panes are doubled barred and once could swing out for cleaning. The iron cage is still intact. The jail originally stood on S. Oregon Street across from the back of the town hall. |
It was moved to its present location around 1900 by a horse and cylinder-like device that slowly inched along until it reached it new home.

1884-1885 Council begins planning for the construction of a red brick jail.
1888, Aug. 21 The low bid of $539.00 was accepted and a contract was awarded.
1889, Spring Final work on the building was completed.
1942 Prisoners started to be transported to Newark, Ohio.
2000 Johnstown Historical Society start a "Save the Jail" project.
2003 The Johnstown Jail is designated as part of the National Register of Historic Places
