This house served as a school from 1855 until 1885.

In the photo the school eventually became the residence of Mr. and Mrs. George Crawford, who stand in front of the house.

At the time of the picture, the address was 132 South Main Street. The building no longer exists today.

The Academy - "Old School House"
The oldest known school in Johnstown is now only a remnant of the first full secondary institution in Johnstown. Building began on the “new” Johnstown school in late June or early July 1884. It was first occupied on January 3, 1885.

It often was called the Academy School and was situated on South Kasson and East College streets.

On July 19, 1913 ground was broken for a new addition to the Academy School building.

This structure served Johnstown students from 1885 until 1927.

A watercolor of the school hangs in the Babcock Library.

Willis C. Adams School Building
As early as 1912 the Johnstown School Board members had first discussed a new building to replace the one at College and Kasson streets. However, that did not take place until a school bond issue was passed on November 1926.

Voters were told that the proposed new building will accommodate 350 pupils. It will be of brick, steel and concrete construction, fireproof throughout. In addition to the necessary classrooms, it will have the following departments: science laboratory, Smith-Hughes Agriculture Laboratory and Farm Shop, Home Making Course, Commercial Training and Physical Education in a new Gymnasium with a standard playing floor and elevated seats for 500 spectators. The auditorium will seat approximately 600. All of this for $125,000.

With the passing of the bond issue, construction began and a cornerstone was laid in 1927. As the new school was nearing completion, the Board purchased 280 chairs and heavy canvas shades for the windows.

On Monday, February 20, 1928 students of the Johnstown Rural School District are welcomed into their newly built facilities at North Oregon Street and West. Maple Street for their first day of school.

On Friday, March 2, 1928 the school is officially dedicated.

The school was abandoned and demolished in 2018.
